5 Beginner Wet Felting Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

Updated: Apr 12

When I teach felting workshops in my Surprise, Arizona studio, I see the same handful of beginner mistakes come up again and again. The good news? Every single one of them is easy to fix once you know what to watch for.

Mistake #1: Using Too Much Water Too Soon

New felters tend to drench their wool right away, thinking more water means faster felting. But too much water actually floats the fibers apart instead of helping them bond together. Start with a light sprinkle of warm soapy water. Think "wet sponge," not "puddle."

Mistake #2: Rubbing Too Hard at the Start

Aggressive rubbing in the early stages can shift your design into a jumbled mess. Begin with the lightest touch — flat palms, gentle circles. As the felt firms up, gradually increase your pressure. Start like you're petting a cat, end like you're kneading bread.

Mistake #3: Laying Wool Too Thick (or Too Thin)

Too thick and the inside won't felt properly. Too thin and you'll get holes. Pull thin, even wisps of roving — you should see through each layer. Build up with three to four thin layers in alternating directions.

Mistake #4: Forgetting to Alternate Fiber Direction

Same-direction fibers shrink unevenly. Alternate each layer: horizontal, vertical, horizontal. This criss-cross structure shrinks evenly and produces strong felt. Think plywood — alternating grain makes it sturdy.

Mistake #5: Giving Up Too Early

There's an "ugly stage" where everything looks messy and unpromising. Every felting project goes through it. Keep going — the transformation clicks into place. One minute you're wondering if it's working, the next the fabric is firming under your hands. Trust the process.
