From the Studio Table: How Fiber Art Is Made in My Surprise, Arizona Studio

Updated: Apr 26

There's a moment in every felting session that I live for. The wool is laid out, the colors are chosen, the warm water goes on — and then something shifts. The piece stops being a plan and starts becoming itself.

Where It All Begins

My studio in Surprise, Arizona doesn't look like what most people imagine when they think "art studio." There are no easels, no paint-splattered floors. Instead, there are baskets of wool roving in every color you can imagine, rolls of bubble wrap, buckets of warm soapy water, and towels everywhere. The desert light comes through the windows and hits the wool in a way that makes even the raw materials look beautiful.

Every piece of fiber art I create starts at this table. Whether it's an art quilt, a felted wool vessel, or a landscape wool painting, the process begins the same way: with my hands, some wool, and an idea that I'm willing to let change along the way.

Choosing the Wool Palette

I think of wool the way a painter thinks of pigment. Each fiber has its own character — Merino is soft and blends like watercolor, while coarser wools add texture and structure. I usually start by pulling out more colors than I think I'll need. Sometimes unexpected combinations emerge. A rust-orange next to a sage green. A deep indigo beside raw cream.

Water and Transformation

When the warm soapy water goes on, everything changes. Colors deepen. The loose fibers become a single, connected surface. There's a physical conversation between my hands and the wool. I can feel when it's ready for more pressure, when it needs more water, when it's starting to firm up into something real.

The Reveal

When I unroll a finished piece for the first time, there's always a small moment of surprise. No matter how carefully I plan, the wool has its own ideas. Colors blend in unexpected ways. This is what I love about fiber art — it's a collaboration between the maker and the material.

Why I Share This Process

Understanding how something is made deepens your appreciation for it. If you'd like to see the finished pieces, browse my gallery. And if you'd like to experience this process yourself, I'd love to welcome you to one of my felting workshops here in Surprise, Arizona.

If you'd like to learn how to create felted art like this step by step, my workshops and courses are available through Rita Chester Fiber Art. I hope to see you at the studio table soon.
